About Me

My name is Travis D. Bird, and I’m running to serve as your next Commonwealth’s Attorney
because I believe in a criminal justice system that is fair, effective, and rooted in community
trust. Let me tell you a little about myself.

I was raised in a law enforcement family, the youngest of four children, spending my first
thirteen years in Roanoke, Virginia, before moving to Port Charlotte, Florida, when my father
retired from the U.S. Marshals Service. From a young age, my parents instilled in me a deep
respect for service and an unwavering work ethic, values that have guided me throughout my life
and career.

I earned my degree in Criminology from Florida State University. From my sophomore year
onward, I worked steadily through college in various jobs, including retail, a law firm, and with an
engineering and environmental lobbyist. Upon graduation, I moved to Northern Virginia, where
I lived for three years, balancing two jobs: one in investigations and another in loss prevention.
This experience further sharpened my understanding of the justice system from multiple angles.

Motivated by a growing passion for the law, I returned to Florida to attend the University of

Miami School of Law. After completing my first year, while many of my peers pursued study-
abroad programs, I chose to clerk for a federal judge. I worked my entire way through law

school, volunteered as a Big Brother to mentor youth, and gained practical experience through
internships at the Broward Public Defender’s Office and the Fort Lauderdale City Prosecutor’s
Office. These opportunities reinforced my conviction that public safety and justice are not
opposing goals; they go hand-in-hand.

After graduating, I began my career in public service with the Department of Juvenile Justice as
a supervisory probation officer. That position helped me to understand the different approaches
to juvenile crime. From there, I served on both sides of the courtroom—as an assistant public
defender and as an assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, eventually taking on supervisory roles
in each. In 2014, I was honored by my local bar association with a nomination for a General
District Court judgeship. Although I was not appointed at the time, it was a humbling experience
to know that my peers trusted my judgment and thought me to be fair and just.

The following year, 2015, I was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for Spotsylvania County.
During my two terms, I led with integrity, focused on smart prosecution, and earned the trust of
voters, almost tripling voter support in my re-election. After leaving elected office after almost
twenty years of prosecuting, I continued my commitment to justice by training prosecutors and
law enforcement officers nationwide as an Assistant Director of Education and Engagement at
the non-profit National District Attorneys Association.

Missing being closer to the system, and wanting to help a colleague and a small jurisdiction, I
have returned to the courtroom as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Richmond County
because I never lost sight of what drew me to this work in the first place: a deep belief in equal
justice, public accountability, and keeping our communities safe.

However, the best and most rewarding job I have ever had has been being a dad to my incredible
daughter Avery. She has made me a better person and the luckiest dad in the world. I strive to
be a role model and to make the world a better place for her.

As YOUR Commonwealth’s Attorney, I will use my experience, judgment, and leadership to
deliver justice that works for victims, for defendants, and the community as a whole. I ask for
your support so that, together, we can build a safer Fredericksburg, one case at a time, one
decision at a time.

Soy Travis D. Bird y me postulo para servir como su próximo Fiscal del Estado (Commonwealth’s Attorney) porque creo en un sistema de justicia penal que sea justo, eficaz y basado en la confianza de la comunidad. Permítanme contarles un poco sobre mí.

Crecí en una familia dedicada a las fuerzas del orden, siendo el menor de cuatro hijos. Pasé mis primeros trece años en Roanoke, Virginia, antes de mudarme a Port Charlotte, Florida, cuando mi padre se retiró del Servicio de Alguaciles de los Estados Unidos. Desde temprana edad, mis padres me inculcaron un profundo respeto por el servicio y una ética de trabajo inquebrantable, valores que me han guiado a lo largo de mi vida y carrera.

Obtuve mi título en Criminología en la Universidad Estatal de Florida. Desde mi segundo año universitario trabajé de manera constante, en empleos que incluyeron ventas minoristas, un bufete de abogados y como cabildero en temas de ingeniería y medio ambiente. Tras graduarme, me mudé al norte de Virginia, donde viví tres años y trabajé en dos empleos: uno en investigaciones y otro en prevención de pérdidas. Esta experiencia profundizó mi comprensión del sistema de justicia desde múltiples perspectivas.

Motivado por una creciente pasión por el derecho, regresé a Florida para asistir a la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Miami. Después de completar mi primer año, mientras muchos de mis compañeros participaron en programas de estudio en el extranjero, yo elegí trabajar como asistente legal para un juez federal. Trabajé durante toda la carrera de derecho, fui voluntario como “Hermano Mayor” para orientar a jóvenes y adquirí experiencia práctica a través de pasantías en la Oficina del Defensor Público de Broward y en la Oficina del Fiscal Municipal de Fort Lauderdale. Estas oportunidades reforzaron mi convicción de que la seguridad pública y la justicia no son objetivos opuestos; van de la mano.

Después de graduarme, comencé mi carrera en el servicio público con el Departamento de Justicia Juvenil como oficial de libertad condicional en funciones de supervisión. Ese puesto me ayudó a comprender los distintos enfoques frente al crimen juvenil. Luego, trabajé en ambos lados del tribunal: como defensor público adjunto y como Fiscal Adjunto del Estado (Commonwealth’s Attorney), asumiendo eventualmente funciones de supervisión en ambos roles. En 2014, la asociación local de abogados me honró con una nominación para un cargo como juez en el Tribunal de Distrito General. Aunque no fui designado en ese momento, fue una experiencia muy gratificante saber que mis colegas confiaban en mi criterio y me consideraban una persona justa y equitativa.

Al año siguiente, en 2015, fui elegido Fiscal del Estado para el Condado de Spotsylvania. Durante mis dos mandatos, lideré con integridad, enfoqué mis esfuerzos en una fiscalía inteligente y gané la confianza de los votantes, casi triplicando el apoyo electoral en mi reelección. Tras dejar el cargo después de casi veinte años de trabajar como fiscal, continué mi compromiso con la justicia capacitando a fiscales y oficiales de policía a nivel nacional como Subdirector de Educación y Participación en la Asociación Nacional de Fiscales de Distrito, una organización sin fines de lucro.

Extrañando estar más cerca del sistema, y queriendo ayudar a un colega y a una jurisdicción pequeña, he regresado a los tribunales como Fiscal Adjunto del Estado para el Condado de Richmond, porque nunca perdí de vista lo que me atrajo a este trabajo desde el principio: una profunda creencia en la justicia igualitaria, la rendición de cuentas pública y mantener seguras a nuestras comunidades.

Sin embargo, el mejor y más gratificante trabajo que he tenido ha sido ser padre de mi increíble hija Avery. Ella me ha hecho una mejor persona y el padre más afortunado del mundo. Me esfuerzo por ser un modelo a seguir y por hacer del mundo un lugar mejor para ella.
